First German-Taiwanese Green Building Design Forum on September 13th in Taipei
The First German-Taiwanese Green Building Design Forum brought together experts, government and industry representatives to discuss green and sustainable building materials and practices. The participants discussed sustainable building standards and certifications and the effects an enforceable legal frame can have in reducing energy consumption. Industry leaders also introduced their newest and innovative products for building insulation, energy retainment and energy generation. Mayor of Taipei, Mr. Ko Wen-Je joined us for a special event, the BASF Ice Cube Challenge. The same amount of ice had been placed in two cases, one insulated with modern insulation materials and the other without insulation, to showcase the effect good insulation has on keeping the cold inside and the heat outside in modern buildings. TIER expects growth to remain tepid through 2018
Taiwan´s economic growth is expected to remain tepid until 2018 amid prolonged weakness in the world’s major economies, the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER) said last week. The think tank forecasts the nation’s GDP to grow about 0.77% annually this year with little change over the next two years. Even though exports grew in July compared to last year, those gains were mainly made by the semiconductor sector, which alone cannot sustain the momentum required for an economy-wide recovery. Number of SMEs reached high of 1.38 million in 2015
In a White Paper released by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the number of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is said to have reached an all-time high of 1.38 million last year, up by 2.29% from last year and accounting for almost 98% of companies nationwide. 98,000 new SMEs were established in 2015, an increase of 4.43%, mainly wholesale and retail businesses. SMEs also account for 78% of overall employment. The MOEA attributes the increases to the government’s efforts to promote innovative startups and integration of traditional and virtual business models, and to make starting a new business easier. MediaTek grabbing bigger share of the IoT market: Gartner
Handset chip designer MediaTek is increasing its presence in the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) market due to its earlier entry than its rivals, research and advisory firm Gartner said last week. “MediaTek has an advantage over its rivals due to its strong presence in the Asian market, primarily China, but that is also a weakness as MediaTek will take a longer time to expand beyond Asia,” Gartner analysts stated. By 2018, 80% of IoT endpoint design would be prototyped on development boards and worldwide shipments of IoT devices are set to soar to 20.8 bn. units in 2020, from 6.39 bn. units this year, the market researcher forecast. MediaTek had stated in June that the firm’s chips used in IoT applications would double their revenue contribution to about 10% in the next three to five years. IoT chips used in “smart” homes, wearable devices and the automotive sector would be the major revenue sources and China would be the major market. (Taipei Times, 14.09.2016)

Acer founder proposes concept for ‘smart’ cities

Acer founder Stan Shih last week proposed that Taiwan should promote the development of “smart” cities through a public-private-people cooperation mechanism. At a seminar hosted by the Industrial Technology Research Institute, Shih argued that Taiwan is in an ideal position to become the ‘silicon valley’ of Asia. Taiwan is in an ideal position to transform into a hub for global innovation by taking advantage of the world’s largest Chinese-speaking market, its advanced information and communications technology sector and software and service architecture and the fact that it is home to the world’s largest contract manufacturing firms. Declining number of business travelers hurting local hotels
Business travelers have declined 20% over the past decade as major trade fairs increasingly lose importance on the world stage, a trend that could persist and pose a challenge to hotels targeting them, Taiwanese hotel operators said yesterday. Taipei hotels used to run at full occupancy rates during Computex, one of the world’s largest computer and technology trade shows held in Taipei annually, but turnout proved disappointing this year because China organized a consumer electronics show at the same time, Leofoo Tourism Group stated. According to the Gloria Hotel Group, the government and the tourism industry should work together to make foreign travelers stay longer and boost tourism revenue rather than focus on the number of tourists. Taiwan sets short-term PV installation capacity target of 1.52GWp
The Taiwanese government approved a 2-year photovoltaic (PV) power generation development project, proposed by the Bureau of Energy (BOE), with a target total PV generation of 1.52 GWp. This includes 910MWp rooftop PV systems and 610MWp ground-mounted PV power-generating stations. The project is expected to bring an estimated USD 2.91 bn. in investment and create 9,120 jobs until 2018. The project will also start off a long-term PV power generation development plan which aims at reaching cumulative PV installation capacity of 20 GWp and power generation of 25 bn. kWh in 2025.
