Bank of Taiwan is to set up a new representative office in Frankfurt

According to a report of the Taipei Times, the Bank of Taiwan approved plans to set up a representative office in Frankfurt, marking the first pre-emptive move of a Taiwanese bank due to the UK´s decision to leave the European Union. Even though the Bank of Taiwan hasn’t made any moves to shut down the London branch yet, this shift of focus to Frankfurt is pointing the way for future developments. Mr. Eric Menges, President & CEO of the FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH, the inward investment agency of FrankfurtRheinMain region will also travel to Taiwan personally on November 7th and 8th to offer further consultation for financial institutions interested in Europe’s financial center, City of Frankfurt. (Taipei Times, 26.09.2017)

German engineering and technology solutions for structural protection systems

The Maurer Seminar “German engineering and technology solutions for structural protection systems” on September 26th at our GTO office was a huge success. The two representatives of Maurer traveled from their headquarter in Munich to Taipei to share their long-standing experience with the seminar’s participants: Maurer SE stands for continuous development for more than 140 years, around 120 million EUR turnover and an export rate of over 70%. They have agencies in more than 60 countries and they cover five sales regions comprising 101 countries all over the world. After the seminar, the representatives and the participants were given the chance to exchange experiences and to do networking while enjoying tasty German delicacies. 2017 Asia- Pacific Regional Conference in Perth (Australia) 

From November 3rd-5th, the Asia-Pacific Regional Conference (APRC), the most significant bilateral conference between Germany and Australia will redefine the depth and breadth of economic linkages between the two countries. DB Schenker in Taiwan Celebrates 50 Years Anniversary

One year after its initial operations in Hong Kong, DB Schenker Taiwan was founded in 1967, using the high potential of the fast-paced developments in the Taiwanese market. Today their service ranges from air and ocean freight import/export customs brokerage, contract logistics (warehousing, distributions, value added services), as well as to fairs & Exhibitions. Taiwan expected to significantly increase the supply of car electronics

Growth potential for a number of suppliers / Import of machines for the production of semiconductors booming / By Jürgen Maurer

Taipei (GTAI) - The automotive future is electric and is expected to add new growth dynamics to Taiwan's automotive parts industry. In addition to suppliers of mechanical automotive parts, producers of electronics and telematics equipment are also investing in the supply of automotive products. The focus is on export prospects and integration into the global supply chain. Aside from these recent developments, imports of production machines for semiconductors are equally booming. Stable growth at 2% expected for 2018

Cathay Financial Holding C. projected the domestic economy to grow by 2% in 2018, slightly lower than its forecast for 2017. For 2017 GDP growth is expected to reach 2.1%, representing a stable pace of global economic recovery. The cooperation’s forecasts were slightly more conservative compared to the government’s forecasts, which set GDP growth to 2.11% for 2017 and 2.27% for 2018. (Focus Taiwan, 25.09.2017)

Research and Development investment by MediaTek

Taiwanese semiconductor MediaTek Inc is going to invest USD 6.6 billion on research and development in Taiwan over a time span of five years. As part of the company’s ambition to explore new areas of growth, a wide range of technologies are going to be developed, including IoT, Industry 4.0, autonomous driving and 5G communications. An incentive for this step has been set by the government with plans to cut the tax on retained earnings from 10% to 5%.(Taipei Times, 28.09.2017)

TSMC to open factory in Tainan instead of the United States

Unlike Foxconn Technology Group with its move to the United States, the worldwide biggest contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation announced to establish a new factory in Taiwan. In face of past unstable water and electricity supply the government is trying to prevent top technology firms from leaving the island. TSMC chose the Tainan Science Park for their new advanced 3-nanometer chip factory and is therefore paving the way for further investment of electronics suppliers in Taiwan. (Taiwan News, 29.09.2017)

Gogoro enters Japanese market

Gogoro Inc, Taiwan’s largest supplier of electric scooters, is going to launch a scooter-sharing service in Ishigaki, Japan. Furthermore the company will feature an open battery-swapping system that could also be used to power cars in the future. In Berlin and Paris Gogoro already provided a total of 1,600 scooters for rental service. Globally 400 GoStation battery-swapping stations are provided by Gogoro, with 17,000 batteries swapped for 40,000 users per day. (Taipei Times, 29.09.2017)

Start-ups becoming more popular in Taiwan

According to a new survey released by an online job bank, 90% of Taiwanese office workers have had the idea of starting their own business, but only 33% have realized their idea. The most popular types of startups are coffee and tea shops (39.6%), bakeries (38.2%), restaurants and catering services (36.4%), apparel and accessory stores (25.2%) and art design and cultural and creative studios (20.3%). (Focus Taiwan, 26.09.2017).

Recruitment of young people to give rise to investments

Due to a steady decline in investments Taiwan’s Premier William Lai announced to boost investment in Taiwan by restructuring the InvesTaiwan Service Center. The Institute serves as a subsidiary to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and is aimed at the recruitment of young professionals to tackle business development. Aside from InvesTaiwan the government is also going to review infrastructure development plans and public business entities in order to further promote domestic investment. (Taiwan News, 27.09.2017)
