Content: Dr. Christian Knütel will provide an overview of the issues and features lenders will typically look at and require in the legal due diligence process in order to assess the bankability of an offshore wind project. The talk covers regulatory (incl. PPA), permit, corporate and project contracts aspects. In this context Christian will explain what developers need to consider from an early on. In addition, Christian's presentation will briefly describe typical key features in the project finance documentation of an offshore wind project (credit and security documents).

About the speaker: Dr. Christian Knütel heads Hogan Lovells' European Offshore Wind Project Finance Practice. His experience covers all stages of offshore wind projects, from works, supply and service contracts and project financing up to post-construction litigation and project M&A. Especially in this sector, Christian is a recognized authority, having worked on a big variety of major domestic and international projects. Christian is up to speed with the technical background of projects and the current trends on project and finance contracts. He works closely with Hogan Lovells' regulatory, banking, arbitration and M&A teams, and coordinates with overseas colleagues on cross-border projects. In addition to various other publications on project and energy/infrastructure topics, he is author of the offshore wind chapter in the new standard textbook on capital projects (Rechtshandbuch Anlagenbau), Munich 2015. The international legal directory "Best Lawyers" recommends Christian frequently for "Project Finance and Project Development" in Germany.

Recent experience includes advising:

 - The offshore wind farm Merkur on the EUR 1.6bn project financing of the 400 MW offshore wind farm Merkur in Germany, the advice including all aspects of the project development, finalizing the project contracts, aspects of grid connection and approval and the entire limited recourse financing process up to financial close (2016)

 - An international IPP on the EUR 1.3bn acquisition and financing of an 252 MW offshore wind farm in Germany (2016/2017)

 - A lender on the refinancing of the offshore wind farm TWBII in Germany (2017)

 - An international offshore contractor and supplier on two material disputes relating to the delayed completion of two onshore grid connection projects (ongoing)

 - Since 2006, a variety of renowned international manufacturers, contractors, investors, project developers and lenders on over 30 European offshore wind projects in Germany, France, the UK, Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands on regulatory, project, finance, M&A and dispute matters.
