German Trade Office Taipei Commemorates 30th Anniversary
Established in 1981, the German Trade Office Taipei (GTO) has actively promoted economic relations between Taiwan and Germany for 30 years. Together with over 450 representatives from business and politics the GTO celebrated its 30th anniversary with a gala dinner at the Grand Hyatt Taipei on September 15, 2011.
Dr. Christina Y. Liu, Minister of the Council of Economic Planning and Development (CEPD), Dr. Lou-Chuang Lee, Minister of the National Science Council, Mr. Francis Kuo-Hsin Liang, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and guests from Germany Hans-Joachim Otto (MP), Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, Dr. Michael Fuchs (MP), Chairman of the Taiwan Committee of German Business, and Dr. Martin Wansleben, CEO of the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) attended the gala dinner.
Dr. Martin Wansleben hosted the event together with Dr. Roland Wein, Executive Director of the GTO. Looking back on the last 30 years, Dr. Martin Wansleben applauded the remarkable development in trade and investment between Taiwan and Germany. When the GTO started its activities in 1981, the bilateral trade amounted to 1.56 billion USD and after 30 years had reached its all time high with 14.77 billion USD in 2010.
He emphasized the GTO’s important role in fostering Taiwanese German business relations by supporting business delegations, offering investment consulting, releasing publications and organizing symposiums and networking events. “We have come a long way. What virtually started to be the first Representative office of German Business in Greater China has developed over the years to become a full fledged service provider embedded into the network of bilateral German Chambers Abroad.” he said.
Dr. Martin Wansleben thanked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Taiwan for their continuous support as well as the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and the Chinese International Economic Cooperation Association (CIECA) for their long lasting cooperation.
On September 16, the 11th Taiwanese-German Joint Business Council Meeting took place, chaired by the two co-chairmen Theodore Huang, Chairman of the Taiwanese-German Economic Cooperation Committee, and Dr. Michael Fuchs (MP), Chairman of the Taiwan Committee of German Business. The forum discussed three main topics: Mega Cities, Renewable Energy and E-Mobility and closed with the signing of a joint statement.
